Abstract Submission

The European Association of Phenomenology, Psychopathology and Psychotherapy (EAPPP) invites submissions for the 3rd International Conference, to be held in Athens on 2–3 October 2026.

We welcome contributions that engage with the conference theme:
“Phenomenology and Psychotherapy: Disclosing Meaning in Encounters.”

How does meaning emerge in the between of the psychotherapeutic encounter?
Traditionally, the ‘truth’ of the subject has been approached as an object of discovery that can be categorised, classified and treated according to its diagnostic type. Psychological states, emotions and behaviours have been interpreted as things that a subject possesses more or less consciously, more or less volitionally. However, what is missing from this framing is the meaning of the ‘symptom’ insofar as it shapes the subject’s correlation to the world. The ‘symptom’ discloses a way of being-in-the-world, a holistic intentional and existential orientation irreducible to the causalities that co-appear with it.

This conference invites contributions that explore psychotherapeutic encounters as sites of the disclosure of meaning, where the lifeworld of subjects can show itself from itself, free from distortions of causal or axiological prejudices. The conference welcomes contributions in this broad direction, including both reflections on clinical practice and theoretical inquiries that engage empirical psychology, psychiatry, psychotherapy, and the phenomenological tradition (e.g., Edmund Husserl, Martin Heidegger, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Jean-Paul Sartre, Emmanuel Levinas, etc.).

In an age increasingly dominated by diagnostic abstraction and therapeutic standardisation, this conference asks: what would it mean to return to the phenomenon itself in the space of the encounter?
